Providing mobile FEES swallow assessments to the greater Puget Sound Washington region

What is FEES?

What is FEES?

Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES) is a safe, cost-effective, and time-saving alternative to Video Fluoroscopic Swallow Study (VFSS) or Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS)

During a FEES assessment, a slender endoscope is passed through the nose to the back of the throat giving a “bird’s eye view” directly into the pharynx, larynx and trachea.  The patient is tested with foods and liquids, which may be dyed with food coloring, to evaluate swallow function and aspiration.

Videofluoroscopy or Modified Barium Swallow studies (VFSS or MBSS) have long been viewed as the “gold-standard” for evaluation of dysphagia; however, it is not always practical or the best test in some clinical settings. FEES has been shown to be safe and effective for instrumental swallowing evaluation.  Multiple research articles have also repeatedly proven that FEES is just as accurate with even better sensitivity and specificity for detecting aspiration than VFSS.

How can FEES help my patients?

Puget Sound Swallow Diagnostics is committed to improving the lives of patients, through high quality instrumental swallow assessments.

FEES study provides reduced wait times for imaging and improved clinician accuracy, both of which can reduce costs associated with hospital re-admissions for pneumonia, respiratory distress, dehydration, UTI, electrolyte imbalance, and more.

Our goal is to provide thorough assessments and develop solutions that make sense for the patient, treating SLP, and the facility!

Who Needs FEES?

R

Patients who have been on modified diets for an extended amount of time. At your next routine screening, think about if a patient on long-term thickened liquids actually still needs them. If you’re not sure, FEES will help find the answer!

R

Patients with a new diagnosis of dysphagia or who you suspect may have dysphagia.

R

Patients who need a swallow treatment plan to manage dysphagia and rehabilitate the swallow.

R

Patients who require modifications to their diet.

R

Patients with a history of tracheostomy, intubation or laryngeal injury, vocal changes, or for whom secretion management is a concern.

You cannot assess, diagnose, and treat what you cannot see!
