Why FEES (Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow)?
EVIDENCE BASED
FEES is a Gold Standard assessment. Research has shown that FEES can accurately identify dysphagia and help guide appropriate treatment strategies and food textures. FEES has shown to be more accurate in detecting aspiration as compared to modified barium swallow studies (MBSS).
COST EFFECTIVE
FEES costs about 25% of sending a patient out for a modified barium swallow, and pays for itself in about 2 months when a patient is able to upgrade from thickened liquids to thin. FEES avoids the additional costs of VFSS, such as transportation, radiologist, barium and other hospital charges. The treating SLP helps with the FEES and can bill for that time, keeping productivity up.
COnvenient
FEES is done wherever the patient is and in their usual eating position. Real food is used and there is no barium or radiation involved. If the SLP wants to test special foods, that can be done too! The SLP contacts PSSD directly, making scheduling easy and quick.
Who Needs FEES?
Patients who have been on modified diets for an extended amount of time. At your next routine screening, think about if a patient on long-term thickened liquids actually still needs them. If you’re not sure, FEES will help find the answer!
Patients with a new diagnosis of dysphagia or who you suspect may have dysphagia.
Patients who need a swallow treatment plan to manage dysphagia and rehabilitate the swallow.
Patients who require modifications to their diet.
Patients with a history of tracheostomy, intubation or laryngeal injury, vocal changes, or for whom secretion management is a concern.
You cannot assess, diagnose, and treat what you cannot see!

Identify
The treating SLP identifies a patient who is in need of a FEES. Contact PSSD if you do not currently have a service contract.
Order
The medical provider must write an order using the term “FEES” as part of the order.
Schedule
The SLP contacts PSSD to schedule the FEES at a mutually agreeable time.
